MAKING A PLAN
 |
 |
PLANNING AHEAD
Street address numbers should be posted where EMERGENCY RESPONDERS can easily see them. Reflective materials are recommended. (Available at Island Hardware and the Eastsound Fire Station). For the little ones in the houshold, make sure they know the street address.
OIFR suggests to have your smoke detectors checked 2 times a year. Note: A good reminder is to check smoke detectors- every time you change your clocks for daylight savings. If you have hard-wired units, be sure there is back up battery in the event of power outages. You can exchange your old smoke alarm batteries for new ones for FREE at the Eastsound Fire Station.

If you have a fire extinguisher, the gauge will indicate if it is properly charged. Fire extinguishers should be checked at least once a year. Place the fire exstiguisher in an easily accesible place where you can quickly get to it in case of fire.
Alpine Fire & Safety S, Inc. services extinguishers on the third Thursday of every month. If you would like your fire extinguishers serviced, you may drop it off at the Eastsound Fire Station.
In case of fire, have a family emergency home exit plan. Choose a safe meeting place outside that everyone can get to, and insure EVERYONE knows the location.

SUPPLIES
LIGHT Have at least one working flashlight where you can find it safely, in the dark! Candles, lamps and lanterns should be used with extreme care due to the risk of fire. It is a great idea to have an additional one in each vehicle.
WARMTH Have extra blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing. If you have an alternative heat source, insure it is working properly BEFORE you need it. Never use charcoal barbeques, outdoor grills or any outdoor cooking device inside your home. It may create a life-threatening carbon-dioxide build up indoors.
SAFETY Emergency responders may be delayed or on other emergencies. Keep a first aid kit stocked and ready to go. You may need to take your first aid kit to someone who is injured. Kits are available at Ray’s Pharmacy, Island Market, Ace Hardware, Island Hardware, the Eastsound Fire Station as well as many locations off island.

FOOD Following a disaster, there may be power outages that could last for several days. Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. High-energy snacks like peanut butter, low-salt crackers, granola bars and trail mix are quick and simple. Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables, juice, soup and milk are also recommended.
WATER Water is an essential element to survival and a necessary item in an emergency supplies kit. Following a disaster, clean drinking water may not be available. Your regular water source could be cut-off or compromised through contamination. Prepare yourself by building a supply of water that will meet your family’s needs during an emergency.
HOW MUCH DO I NEED? You should store at least one gallon of water per person per day. A normally active person needs at least one gallon of watee daily for drinking. However, individual needs vary, depending on age, physical condition, activity, diet and climate.
